The club is lucky enough to have the service of 4 coaches.

Laura Delany
Laura is a level 4 British Academy of Fencing foil coach. She has been fencing for 18 years and was a successful youth fencer, winning 4 British Youth Championship titles. She has competed at national and international competitions and represented GB in the Cadet World Championships in South Korea. Soon after she sustained a serious hamstring injury and has not competed competitively since 2007 but she still enjoys fencing socially. Laura hopes to encourage more people to give fencing a go and hopes that some will love the sport too.

Jon Daley

Jon Daley
Jon likes hitting people, so it’s lucky for all concerned that sabre exists. He has qualified as a level 4 sabre coach and is gleefully (some would say worryingly) enthusiastic about doing level 5. As he learned to fence at St Albans, the club has has to take some responsibility for this. He has competed at county and national level and can occasionally be coerced into team events.

Andy Docherty

Andy Docherty
Andy first learned to fence over 30yrs ago at school. He has competed extensively, including representeing the England at the Comonwealth Vets. He regularly coaches students of all ages and holds Level 1 Coaching in Foil. Rumour has it he may also have been seen fencing in a Bond movie, but obviously he can’t talk about that.

Andy Wood

Andy Wood
To use his own words, Andy has been dicking around with fencing for about 15yrs. He has qualified with Level 1 Foil and currently runs our popular beginners courses. (His students seem to like him, but for the love of all things warm and fluffy, please don’t tell him that!) Of piste, Andy is one of our resident beer experts; possibly not surprising when you consider he is also a professional musician.
