3 Counties League
St. Albans Fencing Club Results Page

The 2000/ 2001 season is now over. Bedford won the league, with St. Albans coming 3rd overall - Not bad for our first year of competing.
On this page you'll find the match reports for the St. Albans team matches covering the season.

Wellesbourne vs. St. Albans
June '01
Played at St. Albans

Not quite sure what happened to this one! Wellesbourne first postponed the match then conceded. Ho hum - Oh well, perhaps next year.

Bedford vs. St. Albans
21 June '01
Played at St. Albans

Thought we'd got away with another walkover, but true to their word, Bedford showed up (all be it a little late). The result was an exact replica of our last encounter with Bedford back in March - They won 9:0 and 6:3.
We Foilests went on first to try and wear down the 3 from Bedford - and we ended up loosing 9:0. Barclay got the closest to redeeming our side with a very close match to 4 all, unlucky. Our 3 Epéeists did much better, finishing their bouts 3:6 down, Andy having one 2 of his 3 and Sveta 1. Towards the end, the match had gathered quite a large crowd, and with 27 of us there for the club evening, the whole hall felt busy and active. It was good to see two of our newer members taking part in the match, we novices are feeling a bit 'in at the deep end' but are honing our match technique very rapidly in these open level matches. Pleased to say the club is also suffering from an embarrassment of riches at present, with more volunteers than match places available - Lets hope we can keep this problem for next session! This was James Lee's last match as team captain - Sorry we couldn't give him a better last match - Thank you James for all your hard work as captain, we know we're not easy to manage some times.

Milton Keynes vs. St. Albans
24 May '01
Played at Milton Keynes

We traveled to Milton Keynes one man down, as John had reported in sick, having torn his ankle again (ouch) - co incidentally MK were down to only two Epée players as well, so all was even.
As in our previous match back in December of last year, MK wiped the floor with us in the Foil. St. Albans managing to regain a little of their dignity in the Epée, by winning one of the 4 bouts in the shortened match.
Special mention to John H who stood in at the last moment on the foil team, having been fencing for only 3 months and this only his second competitive match acquitted him self very well.
Thanks to Milton Keynes for hosting the match - Hope St. Albans are able to offer better competition next season

Watford vs. St. Albans
4 April '01
Played at Watford

Not a good evening for St. Albans, keeping up our recent record of being whitewashed in the Foil, we were again beaten 9:0, Hoosh was unlucky not to get a few more points in his match against Dominque, but Watford fielded a good team and deserved the strong result.
Honor was a little restored in the Epée, with some close matches, and an eventual result of 5 to Watford, 4 to St. Albans.
Congratulations to Watford, now we've lulled them into false sense of security, we can seek our revenge in next year's league.

St. Albans vs. Welwyn & Hatfield
8 March '01
Home at St. Albans

A none event! Postponed from the 1 March - Welwyn and Hatfield 'no showed' - A great shame, now we'll never know by how many we would have beaten them by. We could have done with the extra point as well, we'll just have to make do with the 2 we get in the circumstances.

St. Albans vs. Welwyn & Hatfield
2 February '01
Played at Welwyn & Hatfield

Welwyn and Hatfield were in danger of being the first HOME team not to turn up for a match, but with much scurrying around and delay, they mustered enough members for the matches. St. Albans dispatched W&H with great aplomb in the foil, but had their come-uppance in the Epée, being beaten 6:3. The teams were closely matched, a look at the score sheet revealing a number of unlucky loosers, finishing on 3 or 4 (and one case in Epée at 5).
Thanks to Grahame, Steve and Chris for presiding - Thanks to Nick for attending at short notice.
The date for the return match is yet to be confirmed.

St. Albans vs. Watford
26 January '01
Played at St. Albans

On a particularly well attended club night, St. Albans were well and truly beaten at Foil (8:1) but nearly redeemed themselves in the Epée, loosing only 5:4.
Paul saved his fellow Foilests from a white wash by winning one fight, after narrowly loosing another. Watford were by far the better team, and deserved their strong win. St. Albans' novices enjoyed the lesson.
Watford were again dominant in the Epée, Chris from St. Albans perhaps a little unlucky to loose two of his fights by a single point.
Well done to Watford. Thanks to James Lee for the organisation, and to John, Paul and Liam for presiding.
We hopefully will do better in the return match - Due 4 April 01.

St. Albans vs. Milton Keynes
30 Dec '00
Played at St. Albans

Following a keenly fought (and watched) set of matches at both Foil and Epée, Milton Keynes emerged victorious with a well deserved score of 8:1 in the Foil and 6:3 at Epée.
Milton Keynes fielded 4 experienced players lead by Frank Mills St. Albans employed the talents of : Nick Cockburn, Roger, James Bird, Michael Waterworth, Philip Allan.
The raw results as is often the case don't do justice to the quality of fencing in some of the matches, a number ending at 5:4 - bad luck to the looser.
Club members were glad to be able to observe other fencers, some with differing styles - Dan's 'high handed' style, reminiscent of engravings of Gentlemen fighting with the short sword, was both elegant and devastatingly effective in his foil matches.
The 9 Foil matches were followed in quick succession by the Epée rounds, many of the players taking part in both, the whole league match being conducted quickly and efficiently in around an hour.
With out doubt, the Milton Keynes fencers were the stronger team, taking away a strong victory. St. Albans hope to provide more fitting competition next time.
Of interest (perhaps?) - The fact that of the 10 fencers taking part, 4 were left handed, this according to the review of the Olympics in Sword magazine, gives a higher ratio than the country teams (at a meagre 34%).
Thanks to James Lee of St. Albans club for the organisation, and to Frank and Dan of Milton Keynes for presiding over the matches.
We look forward to the return match in the near future.
