Well done St. Albans - it's a great trophy, and a shame the other clubs won't get to see it, 'cos we'll obviously be keeping next year as well.

Home to Herts Uni

The Uni president has had to admit defeat - Her team are to busy with 'end of years', and therefore she can't get a team together - The last Uni match was very enjoyable, so we look forward to the new session of matches later this year.

Home to Welwyn & Hatfield

Another no show by W&H, this time in the Intermediate and Novice foil - Oh well, 2 points to St. A. A shame, as we were 'hot to trot', with a number of keen new novices (novi ?) champing at the bit and ready to 'draw first blood'.

Home to Dacorum

Dacorum were so keen, they turned up one night early! They were back on the Thursday to play St. Albans in the Herts Novice/ Intermediate league. St. Albans were beaten 8:1, although as is often the case, the score does not reflect the closeness of some matches, all three St. Albans fencers finishing a number of bouts on 3 or 4 points. Rally of the match goes to David and Paul in their bout, a fantastic to and fro play, ending ironically in an off hit. Helen and Brian's bout fitted perfectly the description of fencing being 'chess with muscles', a good display of strategic thinking and positioning.
Thanks to Mat and Paul from Dacorum for helping with the presiding.

Played at the Hertfordshire University club

A very cold Thursday, saw St. Albans playing away to Herts University (that's Hatfield Polly to those of us of a certain age). Due to gremlins in the scoring boxes, the match planned as electric reverted to 'steam'.
Both clubs were able to field teams of 4, so were able to watch a long night of fencing, whilst we tried not to freeze to the spot.
Vince and Paul emerged from the match, each with an unblemished 4 victories, helping St. Albans to an 11:5 team win.
As ever when team members play individuals from different clubs, some interesting and varied styles and fights emerge - The bout between Paul and Jinx was particularly fast and furious - the mixture of styles helped by the fact that Jinx normally fences Sabre.
Some excellent presiding by the Pauls of St. Albans the University club helped ensure the match went smoothly, the university climbing club using the other half of the hall were given a good insight into the sport.
We look forward to the return match in May.

Played at Welwyn & Hatfield's club

St. Albans travelled to Hatfield with a team of 4, which was fortunate as Welwyn and Hatfield found themselves one person short, James Bird therefore made up numbers for the opposition.
Paul C won his 3 matches, and with Helen conceding only one fight, this gave St. Albans victory 5 games to 4.
The return march is planned for May.
