St. Albans' club fencers
carry away Bronze, Silver, and Gold
St. Albans Fencing Club Medal Tally:-
Gold Medal and Trophy - Nick Cockburn
Silver Medal - Vince Keane
Ladies Foil Bronze - Helen Quillin
An excellent weekend of fencing took place within the impressive sports
facilities at Rickmansworth Masonic School. Representing St. Albans
were Nick Cockburn, Roger Bartlett, Vince Keane and Helen Quillin in
the Novice Foil competition. James Lee took part in the senior foil.
John Halley and Chris Davies competed at Epée on Day 2.

NOVICE FOIL
A strong line-up of novice foil fencers crossed swords in three seeding
pools. Vince and Nick came through undefeated with Roger losing just
the one bout to Vince. Helen had a good victory to her name in a tough
pool. Nick, Vince and Roger cruised through their first Direct Elimination
fights. Unfortunately for St. Albans, Roger and Vince were drawn against
each other in the next DE and Vince emerged victorious.
Both Vince and Nick fenced their way successfully through two further
rounds to meet each other in the final.
The final proved to be an exhausting battle between two equally matched
opponents. Nick narrowly edged the final by the closest of margins,
15-14!
Note to Phil: the Trophy is now available for the Club Trophy Cabinet!
In the Womens Novice Foil, Helen managed one victory and two narrow
defeats in the 'barrage'. An excellent bronze medal winning performance
for her first county championships.
SENIOR FOIL
James Lee progressed through a tough seeding pool with 3 victories to
his name before being defeated in the Direct Eliminators. The standard
of fencing was very high with Jonathan Weeks, a highly competent foil
fencer flick-hitting his way to gold.
EPÉE
Chris Davies and John Halley were drawn in separate Epée seeding pools.
Both came through with two victories. Chris won his first DE fight against
Sinead from Herts Uni while John sat the first DE out. Chris and John
then bowed out in titanic fights against Liam and Jason (Jason only
just beating John 15-12). They could both hold their heads high as their
victors went on to thrash out the final with Jason Fox emerging as champion.
Well done to all that represented St. Albans and shared in our excellent
success.
The Herts County Team Foil takes place in April…let's
