Venue
We meet in the NEW SPORTS HALL at the Marlborough School in St. Albans Click here for map. See The Club page for details. Fencing is on Thursday evenings from 8.00 until 10.00 pm. With sessions generally comprising of a 1 hour group lesson, followed by an hour of 'free play' and individual coaching.

Introduction
Modern Fencing is a fast and exciting sport based on three weapon types; Foil, Epée and Sabre. Matches are played on a 'piste' and are won by the fencer who gets to five (usually) hits first. In 'electric' fencing the score box lights up when a hit is scored, however 'steam' (non - electric) fencing relies on judges to keep their eye on proceedings.

Equipment
The club provides a range of equipment, weapons, protective clothing to allow fencing all three weapons in both 'steam' and 'electric'. We also have a small 'lending library' of books and CD's on fencing available to members.

Fees
The cost per quarter for this year (2005) is £52.50. Fees should be paid to the Treasurer and made payable to the St Albans Fencing Club. If you wish to arrange to pay by standing order please contact the Treasurer  for details.

Insurance
While fencing is not an inherently dangerous sport, it is not without risk. All fencers need to ensure that they are covered by insurance - both for personal and for 3rd party injury. British Fencing Association (BFA) membership provides this - automatically - with different levels of cover for different membership categories. (e.g. for 'social' fencers, the annual premium is in the region of £10:00 pa.) If you have any questions, please ask a committee member. The main thing is to make sure you're covered.

What's New

Beginners Course from the 13th Nov 2008

The cost of the course is £90 and takes a maximum of eighteen adults on a first come first served basis. The course is 7 weeks in total plus 3 weeks free 'trial' membership with the club and includes one year's social membership with the British Fencing Association (BFA). Instruction starts with a 1-hour lesson starting at 8pm. The second hour is free, during which time you are welcome to join the other club members in 'free play', have a private one to one lesson with a coach or learn to use another weapon. You will need to wear trousers that will stretch a bit - tracksuit bottoms are ideal - and a T-shirt. Trainers should not have black soles as these will mark the Gym floor. You should also bring something to drink, as it can be thirsty work. To book your place please contact the Club Secretary for an application form. Please note that it is expected that beginners who continue fencing after the end of the course will purchase a pair of breeches (appx £45) so as to use the electrical equipment.  This is in order to comply with recently improved clothing regulations.

The cut off date for returning the forms is 3rd Nov 2008.
