31.03.22 – Eastern Region Victory, Mental Wellbeing & More!

Eastern Region Review

Perhaps it’s only fair to start with victory, and thus the many successes of Team SAFC at the Eastern Region Senior Open competition this past Sunday in Stevenage.

In Men’s Foil, Ben placed 6th, Giles placed 12th and Daniel placed 15th!

In Women’s Foil, Gemma and Lisa placed 5th and 6th respectively – (plus, Lisa won ‘Best Veteran’ in her event and Gemma qualified for the GB Cup in June!)

In Men’s Épée, Richard R. placed 8th, John M. placed 12th, and Adam placed 21st.

A great showing by all of our talented and brave SAFC team!

Fencing In the Dark? Three Counties Matches Upcoming

Unfortunately due to the power cut last week, we weren’t able to hold club night as planned. Weekly payers should have received a refund for last week’s missed fencing. If you haven’t – please let the club know. The power cut also meant we weren’t able to host Watford for our Three Counties match as well. The match will be rescheduled (watch this space), but please also note that we have a planned away match at Luton scheduled for Tuesday, 12 April. If you’re interested to partake in the glory of Three Counties, get in touch with Captain Richard R.

Mental Wellbeing and Sport

Many people will say that fencing is like ‘three-dimensional chess’ – that is, it’s mental as well as physical! To that end, thinking about spot and mental health and wellbeing is really important. Below are some great resources around sport, physical activity, and mental health.

Through a partnership with Sport England, Rethink Mental Illness have worked with people with lived experience of severe mental illness to co-produce a toolkit to embed physical activity into peer support groups and services. The toolkit is a step by step guide for mental illness support groups and people severely affected by mental illness to be more active and improve their health and wellbeing.
